Curití, a weaving town in northern Colombia, is renowned for its vibrant colors and rich variety of traditional fabrics. To capture the spirit of this region, local artisans worked with fique fiber – a natural material derived from a type of agave – and dyed it in striking shades such as burgundy red, olive green, and deep blue. These fibers were then woven into fringed skirts made from macramé braids – a creative challenge for designer Sebastian Herkner and ames. This artisanal process reflects the fusion of Colombian heritage and contemporary design, perfectly embodied in the Tupies Collection.

German designer Sebastian Herkner has been a long-term collaborator of ames GmbH, visiting Colombia multiple times to immerse himself in its cities, nature, and people. He explored many of the artisan workshops partnered with ames to learn about the unique traditional crafts across Colombia’s diverse regions. A highly sought-after contemporary designer and recipient of numerous industry awards, Herkner is known for his intuitive approach to combining materials, colors, and textures. His designs for ames – including the Tupies Collection – reflect his deep appreciation for Colombian craftsmanship and his talent for translating cultural heritage into modern design.
