Material
Material Description – 100% Natural Virgin Wool from Colombia The Nobsa rug is crafted from 100% pure virgin wool, sourced exclusively from the first shearing of the sheep. Only the youngest and finest part of the wool fiber is used, ensuring a smooth, uniform texture free from straw, plant residues, or other natural particles. This high-quality wool is harvested in the Colombian highlands, where the climate provides ideal conditions for sheep farming. The fibers are naturally breathable, durable, and offer thermal regulation, making the rug comfortable in both warm and cool environments. Dyeing Process – Handcrafted with Natural Pigments The wool undergoes a three-day preparation and dyeing process, carried out entirely by hand. Using natural pigments and plant-based dyes, the fibers are treated in small batches to ensure quality and consistency. After cleaning and combing, the wool is dyed in large vats, allowing the color to be absorbed slowly and evenly. This method results in rich, vibrant tones with subtle variations and natural shading—hallmarks of hand-dyed wool and a testament to the craftsmanship of Colombian artisans.

Care instructions
Care Instructions – Nobsa Rug (100% Natural Wool, Handcrafted in Colombia) 🧼 Regular Maintenance Vacuum weekly using a smooth nozzle (no rotating brush) to preserve the wool fibers. Rotate the rug every 6 months to ensure even wear and maintain its shape. 💧 Spot Cleaning Blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth – do not rub! Treat light stains with lukewarm water and natural soap. Avoid using chemical cleaners or bleach, as they may damage the natural fibers. 🧽 Professional Cleaning For heavy soiling, we recommend professional rug cleaning by a specialist experienced in handling natural wool textiles. 📦 Storage Store in a dry, shaded area, away from direct sunlight. For long-term storage: roll the rug, do not fold, and use a breathable fabric cover to protect it.

Nobsa – A Rug with Story and Character The Nobsa rug, available in three standard sizes, is a striking design by renowned German designer Sebastian Herkner. Featuring subtle color blocking, it creates a fascinating multidimensional effect that adds depth and structure to any space. The graphic pattern is inspired by the colorful plastic bags used by Colombian farmers to transport potatoes—an everyday object reinterpreted through Herkner’s artistic lens. By combining tonal color shades, varied weaving techniques, and a distinctive pyramidal yet rectangular shape, Nobsa becomes a true statement piece in interior design. The rugs can be layered and overlapped, allowing for new shapes and color combinations that adapt effortlessly to a wide range of interior styles—from minimalist to eclectic. The collection is complemented by cushions that echo the rug’s pattern, creating a cohesive and stylish ensemble. Whether in private homes or sophisticated commercial spaces, Nobsa brings texture, warmth, and cultural depth to any environment. Inspired by Nobsa, Colombia More than just a name, Nobsa is deeply rooted in the culture and landscape of its namesake town in Colombia. Located in the Boyacá department, nestled in the Andes Mountains, Nobsa is known for its rich textile heritage and artisanal wool products, including the traditional ruanas—thick ponchos once worn by the indigenous Muisca people. The region is celebrated for its vibrant markets, colonial architecture, and a thriving tradition of handweaving. The geological setting, local flora and fauna, and craftsmanship legacy of Nobsa are reflected in the rug’s color palette and structure. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity—just like the design of this exceptional product.
Craftsmanship from Nobsa – A Rug of Character and Precision The Nobsa rug is handcrafted in a small, family-run workshop located in the town of Nobsa, Colombia—a region with a rich textile heritage dating back centuries. Each rug is made entirely by hand and undergoes a meticulous production process. It takes three days to dye and prepare the wool fibers, followed by eight days of weaving to bring the design to life. Horizontal Loom – Tradition Meets Flexibility What makes Nobsa truly unique is the use of a horizontal loom, a traditional weaving technique that has been passed down through generations in Nobsa. Unlike vertical looms, where rugs are knotted from top to bottom, the horizontal loom allows for flat, controlled weaving, enabling artisans to execute complex patterns with exceptional precision. This technique also offers remarkable flexibility in customization. In addition to the three standard sizes, custom widths and lengths can be produced upon request. The structure of the loom allows the design to be proportionally adapted without compromising its visual impact. Each Nobsa rug becomes a tailor-made piece, seamlessly fitting into a wide range of interior concepts—from compact urban spaces to expansive architectural environments.
Sebastian Herkner – Design Rooted in Culture and Colombian Craftsmanship German designer Sebastian Herkner, born in 1981 in Bad Mergentheim, is one of the most influential voices in contemporary design. During his studies at the Offenbach University of Art and Design, he focused on object and furniture design, developing a signature style that merges traditional craftsmanship, modern technologies, and cultural diversity. As a long-standing collaborator of ames, Herkner has traveled to Colombia multiple times with founder Ana María Calderón Kayser. These journeys allowed him to experience the country’s nature, cities, and people firsthand. He visited many of the local ateliers where artisans still practice age-old techniques—from weaving to pottery—and even worked alongside them to better understand their processes. These immersive experiences deeply inform his designs for ames, which include rugs, furniture, and accessories. His creations are known for their authentic color palettes, emotional depth, and exceptional craftsmanship. Herkner’s work has earned him numerous international awards, including the IF Award, the Elle Deco International Design Award, and the title “Designer of the Year” at Maison & Objet 2019.
