The Uilas Rug is an extraordinary design using traditional Colombian materials and techniques to create a distinctively modern piece. Textile designer Mae Engelgeer created an abstract shape inspired by the landscapes of the Huila province, which is characterised by the contrast between the Rio Magdalena and the Tatacoa desert. Dry fique fibres are used to recreate the colours and shapes of the desert and the natural virgin wool symbolises the lushness of the river valley. The result is a fascinating rug, available in three sizes that will add a fascinating texture to any room
Each rug is woven by hand in production facilities in the provinces Santander and Boyacá. In both regions exists a long tradition of working with fibres that are made from the leaves of the fique plant. For this rug, our artesanos and artesanos combine these natural fibres with dyed wool threads to create the asymmetrical piece. The preparation of the raw materials alone takes up to five days and the weaving and braiding of the rug takes between 20 to 30 days, depending on the size of the final rug
Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer felt always drawn to textiles – from her school days through her studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to her Masters in applied art at the Sandberg Instituut. Since opening her studio in 2013, she has been driven by her interest in traditional craft techniques. Using yarns, colours, patterns and fabrics, she pushes the boundaries of textile production to adapt old techniques for the modern day. Mae Engelgeer’s signature style combines subtle colour palettes, patterns and linear elements
