Since the Spaniards brought the sweet Obleas to Latin America in the Middle Ages, countless dessert variations have developed around this traditional wafer, with fresh flavors and textures from the tropic. Such combinations is what inspired the designer Mae Engeleer, which took the traditional Oblea shape as the basis for her new Ames collection. The benches, stool and table are handmade in Bogotá using traditional basket weaving techniques. The design core: the round shape, with a structure and texture that playfully and subtly reminiscent of the delicious dessert.
"I prefer to work intuitively, I'm a dreamer when it comes to creating new atmospheres. But the right materials, colors and techniques are just as important.". The Oblea collection is made from sustainable yaré fibers, the fibers of a tree plant grown in the Córdoba region in the north of Colombia.
Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer felt always drawn to textiles – from her school days through her studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to her Masters in applied art at the Sandberg Instituut. Since opening her studio in 2013, she has been driven by her interest in traditional craft techniques. Using yarns, colours, patterns and fabrics, she pushes the boundaries of textile production to adapt old techniques for the modern day. Mae Engelgeer’s signature style combines subtle colour palettes, patterns and linear elements.
