Hundreds of shades of red, rocky reefs shaped by the wind, a fascinating interplay of light and shadow: when you
visit the Tatacoa Desert, you enter a land from another time. The Belgian designer Charlotte Lancelot, known for
designs full of optical illusions and abstract shapes, took that land of the Tatacoa Desert and transferred it to an
artistic carpet made of fique fibers. The agave-like plant is woven into plaits by craftspeople near Bogotá, capital
of Colombia.
A process that takes five days alone before the individual, colorful strands are woven into an abstract weave of
orange, red and brown. The rugs are mostly produced by women, experts in their work and at the same time heads
of their families, who need at least 15 days in total for the small rug version.
Charlotte Lancelot is a product and textile designer based in Brussels, creating objects that play with abstract shapes, optical illusions and the innovative use of materials. She studied at the Industrial Department of the Ecole Nationale des Arts Visuels de la Cambre in the Belgian capital. In 2005, she started her own studio, and, just a year later, was chosen to curate the Milan Designweek exhibition by Wallpaper magazine. She has worked with international brands, including GAN Rug. Since 2008, Charlotte has been teaching at the National School of Arts ESA St Luc Brussels.
