The Chumbes Layer is an extraordinary living accessory created by Dutch textile designer Mae Engelgeer. With its generous proportions, it can be used to add comfort on seating benches or as a cozy floor cushion. The layer features a very intricate stripe pattern that is inspired by the Chumbe Inga, a traditional Colombian garment. It features two different hand-woven motifs that have a ribbed structure, making it a joy to touch. Thanks to the metallic threads that have been woven into the cotton, the cushion has a gentle lustrous shine. The Chumbes collection also includes two rectangular cushions and a cylinder cushion
Each layer is hand-woven in our partner workshops in San Jacinto, a municipality in the North of Columbia. Similar to the production of the hamacas, which are typical for the region, it is the artesanas, the craftswomen, who produce the textiles on vertical looms. It takes up to ten days for the women artisans to produce one cushion
Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer felt always drawn to textiles – from her school days through her studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to her Masters in applied art at the Sandberg Instituut. Since opening her studio in 2013, she has been driven by her interest in traditional craft techniques. Using yarns, colours, patterns and fabrics, she pushes the boundaries of textile production to adapt old techniques for the modern day. Mae Engelgeer’s signature style combines subtle colour palettes, patterns and linear elements
