"With the modular Coco Seating collection, ames presents the first collaboration with Spanish creative studio MUT Design. The design of the outdoor series, which includes a lounge chair, a foot stool and a side table, draws inspiration from origami fidget toys popular in Latin culture called comecocos.
While the modul’s outline is simple and geometric, the colourful fabric covers introduce a lively contrast to the design. The neat seams of the textiles evoke the fine edges of the paper objects. In Colombia, this type of hand-woven fabric is traditionally used for making hammocks. Ames invited MUT Design to use it to create the brand’s first upholstered seating collection. ‘We loved the vibrancy of these textiles’, says MUT Design. ‘They are so beautifully crafted. By just swapping one thread, the patterns in the weft come alive. We chose bright, colourful threads to generate depth and perspective so that the pattern and colour seem to change from every angle.’
Thanks to the modular concept, Coco can bring colour and comfort to balconies just as well as to large garden terraces. Coco is available in three bright fabrics with very unique colourways as each combines five different threads ranging from light to intense hues creating pastels with a beaming quality."
Using acrylic yarns made from recycled plastic, Colombian artisans in Cundinamarca, the region surrounding the capital Bogota, create the fabrics using dyed acrylic yarns on horizontal looms. It takes eight days to set up the loom, likewise the manual weaving of the fabric. In an elaborate process, each of the four basic colours is interwoven with five threads of selected yarns in contrasting colours ranging from pale to bright nuances. The final modules are produced in the ames workshops in Bogota, where skilled workers upholster the metal frame with the foam padding and fabric in a process taking between six and eight days.
"In 2010, designers Alberto Sánchez and Eduardo Villalón founded MUT Design Studio in Valencia. Drawing inspiration from nature and everyday objects, they are known for creating contemporary design objects, including furniture, lighting and accessories with a sensual, emotional quality subtly influenced by their Mediterranean heritage. The work of the duo and their multidisciplinary team has been featured in all major interiors publications. They’ve won many awards, most recently a Wallpaper* Design Award, the Edida from Elle Decor Spain, and the BOY Award 2020 from Interior Design Magazine. IMM Cologne invited the studio to create the famous design pavilion ‘Das Haus’ in 2020.
